Artist biography

"Where emotion meets form" : the artist's statement.

I paint bold interpretations of the natural world, capturing its instinct, beauty...its frenzy and tranquillity - my work is a celebration of nature’s resplendence. The sky features in all of my paintings, as a symbol of ultimate freedom.

Yu (as in you) is a visionary multidisciplinary artist whose evocative work spans painting, photography, and sculpture. Born into a modest family on the outskirts of Brussels, Belgium, Yu demonstrated an insatiable curiosity for visual expression from an early age. Drawing inspiration from both the serene natural landscapes of his homeland and the chaotic energy of urban life, Yu has cultivated a unique artistic voice that blurs the boundaries between traditional and contemporary art.

Yu’s paintings are known for their layered textures and emotionally charged compositions, often merging abstract expressionism with symbolic storytelling. His photographic work—captured using both digital and vintage film techniques—explores themes of memory, transience, and cultural identity, while his sculptures combine found objects, organic materials, and industrial elements to challenge perceptions of form and space.

Over the past two decades, Yu’s work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums across the globe, including the Tate Modern in London, MoMA in New York, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His installations have also been featured at major international art fairs such as Art Basel, Frieze, and the Venice Biennale.

Despite his global success, Yu remains intensely private, often retreating to remote locations to create in solitude. Critics have described his art as "emotionally magnetic," "profoundly introspective," and “an exploration of the unspoken.”

Yu’s work continues to inspire new generations of artists and art lovers alike, inviting audiences to see the world—and themselves—through an ever-evolving lens of imagination and truth.
